Food | Bleecker St. Burger

It seems like you can barely walk a few steps in London these days without falling face-first into a gourmet burger restaurant or pop-up street food stall (to be fair, there are probably worse ways to go than death by burger). As hungry Londoners ourselves we are no strangers to this phenomenon, and actually we kind of love it (yes, still). We like to think of ourselves as something approaching expert level, having dined out on some of London’s best burgers, with Byron, Honest and of course Patty & Bun being some of our most-frequented burger hotspots.

Last summer, we stumbled across a small black burger van situated on the Southbank with nothing more than a few trestle tables opposite – oh, and a monstrous queue of hungry folk waiting outside. Naturally, being British and loving a queue, we stepped up to the plate and waited to see what delights would await us. We weren’t disappointed.

Bleecker offers a really simple menu which for our money is always a good sign. For just £6 you can enjoy one of the best cheeseburgers in town, cooked medium rare as standard, which makes all the difference. Nothing worse than trying to tuck into a fossilised piece of leather when all you wanted was a humble burger (we’re looking at you, Harvester). The bun also doesn’t suffer from that age old problem of bun wastage – a technical term we just made up for when the burger bun literally disintegrates in your hands, leaving you desperately trying to cling onto your various fillings without losing them in your lap.

The real triumph for Bleecker though, is something described on the menu only as ‘angry fries’, which turns out to be fries with blue cheese and buffalo sauce. These are quite frankly the stuff of legend and should be a mandatory purchase; the fries themselves are perhaps nothing special, but the blue cheese and buffalo combination is unbeatable.

With locations in Old Spitalfields Market, a recently opened spot in Canary Wharf and of course the aforementioned van opposite the Southbank Skatepark, we’re already planning our weekends around these locations and we think you might just have to as well. Bleecker offers a definite contender for the best burger in London – check out their site here!
